“Together, we can make a difference.”
Hey there, I’m Yiming Hu, a senior from Flint Hill School in Virginia, and I’m excited to share my incredible journey of change with you. Growing up in the China and the States, I’ve always been passionate about social justice. But it was in 2022 when I got involved with WeVision that my life took a remarkable turn.
Before this adventure, I had never left the United States or China. So, you can imagine my excitement and nervousness when I had the chance to dive into the education system of Haiti, a place I had only read about.
My mission was clear: I was the Program Coordinator for EduVita, tasked with providing health education to over 200 high school students in Haiti, who were around my age. One of the coolest things about this journey was learning new languages. I studied French in school, but using it every day in Haiti was a whole different ballgame. I even taught myself Kreyòl, the local language. These languages became my bridge to connect with the students.
Working with these amazing young minds, I realized that despite our different backgrounds, we all shared a common goal – to learn, grow, and make a positive impact. It was incredible to see their enthusiasm for education. Standing before those students made me reflect on my own journey. From the DMV to Haiti, I had come a long way. I had stepped out of my comfort zone, immersed myself in a new culture, and learned so much.
But more importantly, I became part of something bigger – a movement for change and empowerment through education. In a world that often feels divided, my experience showed me that education has the power to unite us.
I hope my story inspires you to take your own step towards positive change. Remember, change starts with a single step and an open heart.
Together, we can make a difference.
